New CEA Standard For Measuring Powered Subwoofers Allows Consumers To Make Informed Buying Decisions

Published CEA-2010 Standard Now Available For Implementation.

Arlington, Virginia, 4/18/2006, The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®) announced today that its Audio Systems Committee voted to adopt CEA-2010, Standard Method of Measurement for Powered Subwoofers. The standard provides specific test procedures for determining maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL) output and defines a ground plane test procedure and room correction factor. In addition, the standard outlines reporting requirements for compliance with the standard.

“Broad implementation of this standard will provide consumers who are interested in quality subwoofers the ability to make an informed purchasing decision,” said Charlie Hughes, president of Excelsior Audio Design & Services, LLC and chair of CEA’s R3 Working Group 1, which drafted the standard. “In addition, the standard will create a level playing field for manufacturers of powered subwoofers.”

“After two years of development and testing, CEA’s Technology and Standards department brought industry leaders together to reach an agreement on this groundbreaking standard benefiting both consumers and manufacturers,” said Brian Markwalter, CEA vice president of technology. “CEA-2010 ensures that manufacturers are using the same test procedures to produce maximum output, meaning that consumers have an apples-to-apples comparison point for powered subwoofers.”

The Audio Systems Committee is chaired by Ray Pace, sustaining engineer of Altec Lansing Technologies Inc. Participation in CEA Standards Activities is open to companies and organizations with direct and material interest. CEA membership is not required to participate.
