The Loyola University Health System just released an article that states that some physicians warn that various toys may be hazardous to children’s health. The piece states, “Nothing is more attractive to children than toys with bright colorings. But parents should beware. Brightly colored toys can pose a dangerous health risk to children from exposure to lead-based paint. So far in 2010, the CSPC has ordered the removal of 16 types of toys from store shelves in the U.S. due to high lead counts.”

Lead causes a variety of adverse health effects, including brain and nervous system disorders, high blood pressure and hypertension, and reproductive problems. For children, even low levels of exposure to lead can cause a host of developmental effects such as learning disabilities, decreased intelligence and speech, language, and behavioral problems.

Last year the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that “starting February 10, 2009, consumer products intended for children 12 and under cannot have more than 600 parts per million of lead in any accessible part. This new safety requirement is a key component of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) aimed at further reducing children’s exposure to lead.”

According to the CPSC “sellers will not be immune from prosecution if CPSC’s Office of Compliance finds that someone had actual knowledge that one of these children’s products contained more than 600 ppm lead or continued to make, import, distribute or sell such a product after being put on notice.”

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of lead testing services, provides comprehensive testing services for the public, manufacturers and health professionals. “Manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers should all be aware of these regulations,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing offers quick and affordable lead testing solutions to ensure products are in compliance.”
