TELUS introduces new early device upgrade program

Toronto, ON – TELUS today announced another milestone in its journey to simplify the cell phone ownership experience for Canadians. TELUS’ Clear and Simple Device Upgrade program helps consumers get their hands on the latest and greatest TELUS devices faster, without waiting for contract renewal time.

“Smarter and more powerful smartphones are coming to market faster than ever, so we built this program to help our customers upgrade their devices at any time after completing six months of their contract term. Our customers no longer have to wait until their contract terms expire before they are eligible for a discount on a new handset,” said David Fuller, Chief Marketing Officer at TELUS. “Our Clear and Simple journey began last year with the introduction of Clear and Simple Rate Plans that were easier to understand and eliminated added system access and carrier 911 fees. We followed that with other enhancements including simpler family plans and proactive alerts that notify customers if they are going over their data allotments. Today, we are delighted to be taking another step forward with our Clear and Simple Device Upgrade program.”

Up till now, upgrading to a new device meant having to wait until contract renewal or paying $20 for each month remaining in the term to terminate the contract and start fresh.

Now, TELUS’ new Clear and Simple Device Upgrade program creates a transparent linkage between the real price of today’s powerful wireless devices and the discount customers receive when they select an optional 1, 2 or 3 year term. Customers who wish to upgrade to a new device before the end of their term will simply pay an Early Device Upgrade Fee (EDUF) equivalent to the unrecovered portion of the original handset discount. Customers can then sign up for a new term and enjoy promotional pricing on a new device.

The EDUF is based on the number of months remaining in their term. The closer they are to the end of their contract term, the lower their EDUF will be.

•EDUF for feature phones: $5 for each month remaining in the term.
•EDUF for smartphones: $10 for every month remaining in the term.
•EDUF for premium smartphones: $15 for each month remaining in the term.
