GM Named ‘Legacy in Motion Company of the Year’

Michigan Chronicle Honors Marketing and Purchasing Executives for Community Involvement

DETROIT – General Motors is the Michigan Chronicle’s “Legacy in Motion Company of the Year” for its auto industry excellence, including overall market potential and commitment to community-facing initiatives.

Joel Ewanick, GM vice president of U.S. Marketing; and Bob Socia, GM vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, were also honored as “Legacy in Motion Executives of the Year" at the Chronicle’s 75th Anniversary Gala on Friday evening.

“General Motors has a long, proven track record of community, inclusion and commitment to the city of Detroit,” Chronicle Publisher Sam Logan said. “It is only fitting that we recognize and celebrate their efforts to support our community during a time when many others have walked away.”

The honor was announced a day after GM returned as a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange, 16 months after emerging from bankruptcy reorganization.

Ewanick and Socia were both honored for making a difference in the lives of others through outstanding professional achievement, leadership and community service.

Socia was honored for his commitment on GM’s behalf to diversity suppliers despite the tough economic conditions. In 2010, GM will spend $2.2 billion with minority suppliers.

Ewanick, who joined GM earlier this year, was credited with supporting minority businesses and re-energizing GM’s diversity marketing efforts. His recent selections of Carol H. Williams Advertising and SpikeDDB to manage GM’s African American-focused marketing for the Cadillac and Chevrolet brands was cited as an example of ensuring an authentic and diverse brand landscape.

General Motors Foundation President and Director of Corporate Affairs Vivian Pickard accepted the Corporation of the Year award on behalf of GM and Eric Peterson, GM Vice President of Diversity, accepted the Executive of the Year award on behalf of Ewanick.

“I’m proud to work for a company that actively embraces a diverse workforce, a diverse supplier base and a diverse dealer network,” Peterson said. “I have always believed that understanding and embracing our differences makes us stronger and helps GM win in the marketplace.”

The Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion Awards were created to honor local citizens who display the highest level of leadership, commitment to excellence and unparalleled achievement.
