Rave Reviews for The Greens at Edgewater Golf Club

Charlotte area golf courses faced unprecedented challenges from record summer heat during 2010. Golf courses throughout the Piedmont region struggled to keep their bent grass greens in playable condition. In fact, many golf courses lost the climate battle and closed operations during August and September. Even golf facilities with virtually unlimited budgets struggled with the summer heat and were forced to take drastic measures like creating temporary greens in the fairway.

Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster, South Carolina was among an elite group of courses that retained the health of their bent grass greens and stayed open for play. Edgewater Superintendant Matthew Bunch, employed innovative techniques and a 24 hour maintenance regime to protect the bent grass greens of Edgewater.

The Edgewater Team received coaching from Fuzzy Zoeller’s home course superintendant, Chris Rosio. Fuzzy Zoeller flew Rosio from Indiana to Edgewater on his private jet to collaborate with Matthew Bunch and the Edgewater team. Rosio’s long experience in growing and maintaining bent grass greens at courses like Crooked Stick Golf Club (PGA Championship Course) and Covered Bridge Golf Club was vital to the success of Edgewater. The proactive and aggressive strategy included special mixes of fungicides and protectants as well as a unique small tine aerification process.

“I am extremely relieved the record summer temperatures behind us,” stated Matthew Bunch. "Other courses have waved the white flag on bent grass greens and installed bermuda greens. We believe in the quality of play delivered by bent grass and are pleased to continue to offer the best possible experience for our visitors.”

Edgewater customers recognize and appreciate the difference: “I played here this summer and I have to tell you your greens are looking and rolling great,” stated an Edgewater customer from Charlotte this week. "The best way to describe playing at Edgewater is that it is a great test of golf with the most peaceful and beautiful surroundings imaginable.”
