Siemens 1PH8 motors now available with energy-efficient force ventilated fans
Nuremberg, Germany, The 1PH8 range of motors for main drives developed by the Drive Technologies Division of Siemens has now been extended by models equipped with specially energy-efficient Electronically Commutated (EC) force ventilated fans. These EC fans are used to cool the new 1PH8 motors in shaft heights 180 and 225 with rated outputs up to 310 kW. These coolers are mainly deployed in the medium to high power range and they comply with IE3, the premium energy efficiency class.
1PH8 range of motors
Like water cooling, forced ventilation is a method of cooling to extract motor heat losses, thereby enabling the machines to produce high load torques at low speeds. The variant with external air supply can cool the motor even when it is at standstill. Separate fans are normally implemented using mains-operated standard induction motors. Their operating points and thus also their energy consumption vary according to the connected voltage and frequency. By contrast, EC fans always operate at the optimum point irrespective of the connected voltage and frequency and, with efficiency factors in excess of 90 per cent, they consume very little energy. The energy consumption of the entire 1PH8 motor is reduced as a result. Other advantages of EC fans by comparison with conventional fans are their less louder, smoother operation and their more compact dimensions. An integrated electronic overload protection device also makes them safer in operation and allows use of a supply connection without additional protective circuitry.
