Students From San Francisco’s Bird Perform at Local Music Festivals Performances Raise Money for School’s Music Tuition Assistance Fund

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA) October 13, 2010 – Students from San Francisco’s Bird School of Music (“Bird”) (www.bird-sf.com) recently played at several local music festivals, including Michael Franti’s Power to the Peaceful Festival in Golden Gate Park, the Polk Street Blues Festival and the Kidaroo Music Festival. Student bands displayed their musical chops on such tunes as The Rolling Stones’ “Down Home Girl,” “Wild Thing” by The Troggs and The Beatles’ “Back in the USSR.”

According to Lane Murchison (www.lanesmusic.com), the school’s founder and a prolific musician himself, “It’s a privilege to work with these talented kids. The best part for me is that it gets families together really listening to music, discussing lyrics, figuring out what is hip to play and will make for a good show. Seeing these young kids dig in and lay down a fat groove on anything from Aretha Franklin to Queen to Green Day to Train and everything in between is just amazing.”

“At Bird we teach much more than music,” Murchison said. “Playing in bands teaches kids cooperation, teamwork, self-confidence and goal setting on top of music and performance skills. But most of all they have a great time and so do we.”

In keeping with its motto of “Music, Community, Technology,” Bird recently established the “Fundamental Flyer Fund” to provide music lessons for students in need. The bands and the school donated 100% of the money earned at the Polk Street Blues Festival to the fund to kick-start the tuition assistance program. Going forward, Bird will continue to donate a substantial portion of the money earned by student performances to the fund.

In addition, Lane has pledged to begin donating a significant amount of the money earned from his own concerts to the fund. “I think it’s cool for these young bands to know that they are part of a unique extended musical community,” Murchison said. “Through this cooperative effort it’s my hope that our students will learn that they can help others in this community of artists while doing something they greatly enjoy.”
