Jim Brown, multihull sailor, promoter and designer of “Searunner” trimarans,” has just released the first of a 2-volume autobiography entitled, “Among the Multihulls.”

Pennsville, NJ (October 12, 2010) – Multihull pioneer Jim Brown has just released Volume One of his memoir entitled, “Among the Multihulls.” This autobiography features the story of how he became a sailor, his introduction to multihulls, his famous “Searunner” trimaran models and the Brown family’s cruising adventures in Central America during the 1970s.

“This is about how modern multihulls happened to me,” Brown said. “It’s the story of how they shaped my life and the lives of my colleagues and clients, my family and friends.”

The narrative begins in the mid-1950s, when Jim Brown began working on a Windjammer charter boat in Florida. Traveling aboard to exotic locations such as Cuba, and others throughout the Caribbean, fueled an attraction to the sea, along with a desire to learn how to sail.

Out of that experience Brown encountered some of the early 20th century multihulls that were being built. His fascination with those designs, along with relationships among boat designers such as Arthur Piver, opened the door to his own career as a leading multihull promoter, builder and developer.

Though autobiographical in nature, the book provides readers with a diverse historical analysis featuring many of the people, famous boats, early successes and tragic mistakes that mark the origins of today’s modern catamarans, trimarans and proas.

“I think we early multihullers were not unlike the early aviators who abandoned normal lives to go barnstorming around the country giving aerobatic demonstrations of their flying machines. They were sometimes called aerobats,” said Brown. “We, however, were known by other names, like ‘yachting’s underdogs,’ and ‘the hell’s angels of the sea.’ ”
