Bay Area Singer Songwriter Ian Franklin Announces Release Of Two New Singles
Eclectic Pop-Rock artist is performer at night, music therapist by day
Ian Franklin is a man on his way to the top. He had gained a considerable following, even before the release of his two singles, “Baby I Got Your Fix,” and “Don’t Do Me Like That.”
Franklin will release an EP in late October that includes four new songs, in addition to his two new singles. He’ll be back in the studio in November recording six more songs that will be on his debut full-length release, due out in Feb. 2011.
Franklin’s music is diverse, combining the best or rock, funk, jazz, blues and folk to create a new genre he calls Eclectic Pop-Rock. His songs are often fueled by his own experiences. One moment his music might be promoting an issue about which he feels strongly, and the next he’s providing listeners with relief from their daily stresses.
“Music is part of my soul, my spirit; it runs in my blood and just comes out of me,” said Franklin. “I couldn’t imagine life without being able to write and sing songs and play guitar. I want to make solid, good music that’s my expression, and help others to feel good and dance or cry or whatever the art does for them.”
Franklin was the front man and driving force for the collaborative known as Infinite Frequency before striking out on his own. The band won first place in the Boston Regional Global Battle of the Bands. He’s no stranger to acclaim, but Franklin also knows that fame can be fleeting, so for now, he’s not quitting his day job.
Born in California, Franklin was homeschooled and obtained his first guitar at the age of 12. He was immediately swept away by the music, its power and its poetry. His parents were music lovers with eclectic tastes and exposed him to a wide range of music, including such greats as the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Franklin began writing songs of his own at the age of 12 and joined his first band at 16. He’s played with a number of ensembles, some of which received awards for their outstanding performances.
At the age of 22, he decided he needed to make a stronger commitment to his music and applied to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He was accepted and thought he was on the road to music success, majoring in Music Business and Production. It was about this time that he realized many aspects of the music industry disturbed him. He was drawn to the idea of helping others with his music and changed his career path to Music Therapy and Songwriting.
“I always enjoyed bringing music into the lives of people with special needs when I was growing up, so it just felt right,” said Franklin. “I loved songwriting and songs just come through me. I more channel them than actually labor over them.”
Franklin is in private practice as a Music Therapist, a profession that he enjoys and brings him a great deal of satisfaction. If the popularity of his music continues to increase, it’s a vocation he’ll have to put on hold to meet his professional musical commitments. He admits he often burns the candle at both ends, providing music therapy during the day and pursuing a professional music career by night. He feels the many long nights are well worth the effort.
“I would love to have a successful career as an artist and be able to make that my primary career, while fulfilling my music therapy passion through philanthropic means,” said Franklin. “I’d love to have the money to develop non-profit music healing programs and music in the school programs. My ultimate dream is to have a successful enough career as an artist to fuel my many passions to make the world a better, healthier more musical place.”
