Freelancers and solo professionals honored for their entrepreneurial spirit and their tremendous impact on economic growth

ATLANTA, GA. — Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue has officially declared September 24 Freelancers Day in an effort to recognize and honor the thousands of solo professionals in Georgia and the tremendous impact they have on the state’s economic growth.

This announcement comes on the heels of the International Freelancers Day conference (www.InternationalFreelancersDay.com), the biggest-ever free educational online event for solo professionals, to be held on September 24 and 25.

“Freelance professionals and independent workers play a leading role in helping businesses and nonprofit organizations develop more agility and greater competitiveness in an increasingly challenging environment,” proclaimed governor Perdue. “I encourage our citizens to join me in this special observance.”

“We are honored that Governor Perdue has recognized this rapidly growing segment of the workforce,” said Ed Gandia, co-founder of the International Freelancers Day conference. “As we continue to shift to a freelance economy, solo professionals are not only seeking recognition, but are also looking for better ways to thrive and to create a more flexible and fulfilling lifestyle.”

According to estimates by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 31 percent of the U.S. workforce was self-employed, freelance or contingent in 2005. With a growing number of organizations hiring freelancers to complete key projects faster and more cost-effectively, many economists predict that this number has only increased since the economic downturn began in 2008.
