Symantec NetBackup 7 Recognized with a "Best of VMworld" 2010 Gold Award for Business Continuity and Data Protection

NetBackup 7 reduces complexity by delivering complete protection for physical and virtual environments from a single platform

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that Symantec NetBackup 7 was recognized as a “Best of VMworld” 2010 Gold Award winner for the Business Continuity and Data Protection category by TechTarget’s SearchServerVirtualization.com. NetBackup 7 helps organizations protect, store and recover information from both physical and virtual environments through a single, unified platform to reduce overall complexity, reduce backup times and save operational costs. The award was announced at the VMworld North America 2010 Conference in San Francisco on Sept. 1. In the past four years, NetBackup has been recognized three times in this category.

According to Symantec’s 2010 State Of The Data Center survey, virtual machine protection continues to be a focus for enterprises. However, only 27 percent of companies include virtual machine backup as part of their data centers’ disaster recovery strategies. In addition, 36 percent of respondents listed granular data recovery as the biggest challenge in providing data protection for virtual servers. As organizations increase the number of production applications in virtual environments, the need for a simple and comprehensive approach to backup and recovery becomes more important. NetBackup 7 simplifies virtual server data protection by integrating with VMware vStorage APIs for data protection to increase the backup speed and by enhancing the VMware vSphere Changed Block Tracking capability to enable individual file recovery from block-level incremental backups. NetBackup 7 also adds built-in deduplication to further decrease backup bandwidth, time, and storage for virtual and physical machines from a single solution.

At VMworld North America 2010, Symantec partnered with key industry leaders to present recent benchmark testing results for NetBackup. The testing results highlight the ability of NetBackup to protect more than 3,200 virtual machines on a single backup host, deliver effective media server throughput of 600 MB/s, and provide deduplication rates of more than 98 percent.
