Airbus employees celebrate 40 Years of Innovation with their families

In a tremendous event encompassing five sites in Toulouse, Airbus celebrates today ‘40 Years of Innovation’ in Toulouse together with some 145,000 employees, families and friends. Airbus top management and Airbus pioneers deliver moving testimonies that marked some of the major steps through the manufacturer’s 40 year history.

Over 40 years, Airbus people have developed break-through technologies and innovations that have become world standards. Today is the day to celebrate this together with our employees, their families and friends here at our sites around Toulouse,” explains Tom Enders.

On May 29th, 2009, Airbus started a series of milestone-events to mark its 40th anniversary. Airbus has organised Family Days for its employees so far at 15 sites around the world.

Family Days give employees, their families and friends the opportunity to discover the different professions in aeronautics, to visit all Airbus’ premises, to watch exceptional flying displays and to visit the whole range of Airbus aircraft.

Today’s Family Day is the first time ever that Airbus’ Toulouse sites are opened to the public all together. More than 3000 volunteers are supporting the event organisation and are animating conferences, stands and visits. Exceptional static and flying displays are organised demonstrating Airbus’ history of non-stop innovation and technology leadership.

On the occasion of the Toulouse Family Day, an exceptional company event, Airbus has presented its new logo, unveiled by EADS on Friday Sept 17. EADS is strengthening its branding with a modernized visual identity throughout the entire EADS Group. The Airbus’ logo maintains its strong and symbolic icon combined with a new modern 3D look.

Airbus today is a leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. Airbus has delivered more than 6,300 aircraft to over 420 customers and operators worldwide and boasts a healthy backlog of around 3,400 aircraft for delivery over the coming years. Airbus is a global company with design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK and Spain as well as subsidiaries in the U.S., China, Japan and in the Middle East.

Airbus in Toulouse

Airbus in Toulouse employs some 16,000 people: around 11,000 in the five Airbus Operations SAS sites and 5,000 in Airbus Central Entity, the headquarters. This represents 30% of Airbus employees across the world. Toulouse surroundings also host several aeronautics companies. In the Midi-Pyrénées region, 140,000 people work directly or indirectly in the aeronautic business. The total surface of the six Airbus sites in Toulouse is around 600 hectares.

Airbus’ headquarters, Airbus Central Entity, are located in Blagnac. This site also houses all central functions, customer support and services as well as customer affairs. The site is divided into several locations called Campus 1, 2 and 3.

Airbus also has five industrial sites in Toulouse:

Saint-Martin-du-Touch - Situated west of Toulouse, around 10 km from the city centre

Around 5,600 people work on the Saint-Martin site, which hosts Airbus Operations SAS management and administrative services. The site’s main activities concern engineering (general design, systems and integration tests, definition of the structure, propulsion, etc), the final assembly line of the Airbus A320, central organisation and design / development of the A400M systems.

Louis Breguet - Located in Colomiers, just 15 km from Toulouse

This site hosts the « Electrics » Centre of Excellence; activities related to production support (general services, procurement, human resources, environment); maintenance and logistics activities. About 700 people work on this site.

Clément Ader - Also located in Colomiers

This site, which employs about 1,800 people, is exclusively dedicated to the final assembly and cabin furnishing of the Airbus A330 and A340 long range aircraft family.

The Clément Ader site also hosts the Henri Ziegler delivery centre, used for the delivery of all Airbus aircraft including the A380. The site is located at « Saurous », between Blagnac, Colomiers and Cornebarrieu. 250 people work here, and receive the customer airlines in an environment permitting the complete aircraft delivery process, while meeting the specific requirements of each airline. Its infrastructures are adapted to the significant increase of Airbus deliveries from Toulouse. The centre has been operational since the end of 2006.

Jean-Luc Lagardère - Located on the Aeroconstellation zone in Blagnac, close to Toulouse airport

This site is dedicated to the final assembly and preparation for flight of the A380 and employs about 1,500 people. Once assembled in Toulouse, the A380 flies to Hamburg for the cabin furnishing phase. Finally painted with the customer’s livery, the aircraft is then delivered from Hamburg or Toulouse, after it has been accepted by the customer.

Saint-Eloi - Located in Toulouse,

The Saint-Eloi site is home to the “Pylons and Nacelles" Centre of Excellence, this site is specialised in the development, manufacture, assembly, equipping and testing of engine pylons and nacelles. It is the top European centre for hard metal machining and the transformation of titanium and hard metals. Saint-Eloi employs about 1,000 people and makes extensive use of a flexible assembly workshop and technologies such as laser welding and hot forming of titanium.

Saint-Eloi is the oldest aeronautical plant in Toulouse. Founded in 1920 by Emile Dewoitine, it has taken part in the production of many prestigious aircraft: D1, 2338, D520, Armagnac, Caravelle, Concorde and the ATR and Airbus families.

Airbus Training - Located close to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport

The Toulouse Airbus Training centre provides training for students of all categories: flight crews, maintenance staff, cabin attendants, and performance and operational staff from all over the world. On a total surface of 20 000 sq.meter, the centre operates six Full Flight Simulators (three for the A320, two for the A330/A340 and one for the A310/A300-600), a series of Fixed Base Simulators and diverse PC based System Trainers for all aircraft types as well as cabin emergency and evacuation trainers, and door trainers. The Toulouse training centre offers a wide range of services for trainees, including trips to the surrounding areas of Toulouse. It can host up to 8,000 trainees per year and employs about 400 people.

Guynemer

This site employs 400 people and mainly hosts the production of aircraft technical data, and the infrastructures necessary for continuous training of company employees.
