Today Working Mother magazine named General Mills as one of the nation’s most family-friendly companies in its annual Working Mother 100 Best Companies list. 2010 marks General Mills’ 15th consecutive appearance on the list. In celebration of this accomplishment, General Mills will join the Working Mother 100 Best Companies Hall of Fame.

We take great pride in consistently ranking as one of Working Mother’s 100 Best Companies,” said Ken Charles, vice president of Diversity and Inclusion for General Mills. “It’s not just about providing great benefits and resources to help employees balance the demands of working and parenthood. It’s equally important to offer talented employees rewarding and engaging careers and the opportunity to make an impact on our business around the world.”

Working Mother applauded General Mills for its strong commitment to advancing women and for its approach to workplace wellness, which includes comprehensive health education and wellness programs, resources and preventive care.

General Mills also earned high marks for its evolving commitment to workplace flexibility. “Giving employees flexibility and choice in when, where and how they work results in happier, more productive, and more committed employees,” said Charles. “Workplace flexibility is increasingly important to employees. We offer a variety of formal and informal flexibility options such as part-time work, job sharing, flexible hours, sabbaticals and telecommuting, among other options.”

Overall, General Mills ranked within the top 10 of the 100 Best Companies. Visit Working Mother’s website to view a profile on General Mills and the other winners.

“Twenty-five years ago, we made a bold decision to launch our ‘Best Companies’ initiative and challenge businesses to address the unique needs of working mothers,” said Carol Evans, president, Working Mother Media. “The immense influx of women into the work force demanded changes in workplace culture as companies strove to keep working moms’ talent and loyalty. Today, we celebrate our winners’ untiring commitment to their employees through an impressive array of programs.”

Methodology
General Mills was selected for the 2010 Working Mother 100 Best Companies based on an extensive application with more than 600 questions on work force, compensation, child care, flexibility programs, leave policies and more. It also surveys the use, availability and tracking of programs, as well as the accountability of managers who oversee them. Seven areas were measured and scored: work force profile, benefits, women’s issues and advancement, child care, flexible work, parental leave, and company culture.
