California May Loose its State Rock Due to Asbestos

Garden Grove, CA

In 1965 the State of California named serpentine as the official state rock. California was the first state to name an official rock and the shiny bluish green rock in now the center of controversy.

The reason for the uproar in the state legislature and the media is dangerous asbestos fibers. Serpentine contains asbestos and some legislators, citing health and public awareness, have been pushing to have the rock removed as the official rock of California. Geologists say not all serpentine contains asbestos and not everyone supports the move to change the rock’s designation.

Forty-two of California’s fifty-eight counties are reported to have naturally occurring asbestos in serpentine. Up through the 1960s serpentine was mined in California for asbestos that was then used in a wide range of common building materials from insulation, flooring, ceilings, roofing, siding, fire coating materials and a host of other building products.

Many of those same building materials have today lead to costly asbestos removal procedures, lawsuits and in some cases deadly cancers such as mesothelioma. Today asbestos is no longer used in building materials and its disposal is highly regulated. Individuals and companies are subject to prosecution and fines if asbestos regulations are not followed.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides asbestos testing solutions. “People need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized. This creates a dangerous environment for both workers and building occupants,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Without the proper safety precautions asbestos can be easily inhaled during renovation or demolition projects which could increase one’s chances of developing deadly lung cancer. A simple test can determine if materials contain asbestos.”
