The 90 day public comment period for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde-Inhalation Assessment has almost ended. According to the document, “There is sufficient evidence of a causal relationship between formaldehyde exposure and cancers of the upper respiratory tracts, with the strongest evidence for nasopharyngeal and sino-nasal cancers.”

Widely used in industry, formaldehyde can be found in many consumer products and common building materials such as plywood and fiberboard. Formaldehyde is also a by-product of combustion and other industrial processes.

The most significant sources of formaldehyde in homes are typically from pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde resins. These include particleboard, hardwood plywood paneling and medium density fiberboard. Medium density fiberboard is generally recognized as being the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product.

Its volatility makes it a significant issue for human health. As far back as 1987 the EPA classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) does classify formaldehyde as a human carcinogen and the California Air Resource Board (ARB) has classified formaldehyde as a Toxic Air Contaminant.

Major exposure risks associated with formaldehyde come from occupants inhaling contaminated air. Exposure to elevated levels of formaldehyde may trigger asthma attacks, nausea, watery eyes, headaches and difficulty breathing.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of formaldehyde and VOC testing services, provides formaldehyde testing services. “The EPA’s comments on the safety of formaldehyde should open people’s eyes to its dangers,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Testing for formaldehyde is the best way to ensure our indoor environment is not polluted by this industrial chemical.”
