LiveState Client Management Suite and Professional Services Maintain Standard Desktop Configurations for More than 500,000 Client Devices

CUPERTINO, Calif. - April 4, 2006 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that the U.S. Air Force has selected Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite and Symantec professional services consulting as key support elements of the Air Force Standard Desktop Configuration (SDC), the service’s global client device and software management program. Under the terms of a five-year agreement, the Air Force is utilizing Symantec’s experts and technologies to centrally create, deploy, and manage software packages and configuration settings for hundreds of thousands of Air Force client devices located around the world. Program objectives of the Air Force SDC include enhanced vulnerability management and assured system uptime and availability for end-users.

"Symantec’s LiveState software delivers key capabilities and complementary functions to our comprehensive technology and services team supporting the Air Force SDC,” said Lee Stanford, program manager for the Air Force’s Standard Desktop Configuration. “Performing software deployments, maintenance, and upgrades for users on-demand while simultaneously leaving their devices available for use significantly lowers the SDC’s enterprise-wide resource costs and complexity.”

“The military’s demand for secure and survivable IT assets compliant with policies requires a continuous and integrated approach to asset management spanning security, compliance, administration, and recovery,” said David Saunders, vice president, public sector, Symantec. “The Air Force’s selection of Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite for on-demand inventory, software deployment, patch management, and recovery, among other capabilities, typifies a streamlined and effective means to maintain confidence in critical networks.”

Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite is a lifecycle management solution allowing client devices to be successfully managed, controlled, and protected from acquisition to disposal. The suite features reliable and proven technologies, including Symantec Ghost imaging and pcAnywhere, allowing customers to remotely discover assets, configure and provision client devices, deploy critical patches, remediate disrupted operations, and securely retire clients. Secure disposal of decommissioned devices is enabled by GDisk, Symantec Ghost’s disk-wiping function that conforms to U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) disk-wipe standards, including those set in DOD NISPROM (National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual), 5220.22-M.

Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite also leverages industry-leading patch scanning technology from Shavlik Technologies and incorporates award-winning IT asset discovery and auditing technology from Centennial Corp.

Symantec LiveState Client Management Suite’s open and extensible architecture allows modular capabilities to be added as needed, including system recovery. Interoperability with existing lifecycle management processes and tools minimizes the total cost of owning and maintaining large groups of deployed devices.

Fulfilling the agreement’s professional services component, Symantec experts stationed at supporting Air Force facilities are assisting Air Force personnel with LiveState implementation and operation. Symantec’s enterprise-wide LiveState software and services agreement with the Air Force was facilitated through the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) Enterprise Software Initiative (ESI), a joint project aimed at establishing enterprise-wide DOD software and information sharing practices. Further information on the ESI program can be located online at www.ESI.mil.
