Last week Denver’s ABC affiliate, Channel 7, reported that dirt piles containing asbestos materials were being moved from the Denver Federal Center property. Several large mounds of earth were found to contain asbestos from past excavation and demolition of former buildings on the property. The mounds were removed under the supervision of the Colorado Department of Health and with their removal make way for future development on the property.

Fortunately these materials were tested before being disturbed in the area. This allowed the proper excavation, worker safety and disposal procedures to be put in place to protect people from any aerosolized asbestos dust.

When aerosolized and inhaled the mineral fibers from asbestos can become embedded in lung tissue and cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. In most cases as a person’s exposure to asbestos fibers increases, their chances of developing asbestos related cancers and diseases later in life also rises.

Asbestos occurs naturally in some soils, but it was also used extensively in many old building products and materials. Working with, and the disposal of, asbestos materials is highly regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution and fines if asbestos rules are not followed. Aside from making sure that asbestos materials are properly disposed of, people need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized creating dangerous environments for both workers and area residents.

“Testing for asbestos before beginning any remodeling or construction activity if there is suspect material is essential,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “A simple test is all that is needed so that both area residents and workers are not exposed to asbestos fibers.”
