California Apartment Owner and Contractor Face Asbestos Violations

This month it was reported that two California men face heavy fines for asbestos violations at a Ventura apartment complex. The building, constructed in 1964, recently had water damage from broken pipes that required thirty-six of the units to have repair work done on the ceilings.

According to reports the contractor hired expressed asbestos concerns to the property owner and informed him he did not have the training or certifications to handle asbestos. The property owner is said to have informed the contractor that asbestos would not be a concern.

In addition to the ceiling repair work some units also underwent the removal of old popcorn ceiling texturing materials. Asbestos is commonly found in a wide range of building materials in older structures, including popcorn ceilings in many cases. The two men face heavy fines and prosecutors are said to be investigating if the actions were deliberate or an oversight. By law the removal and disposal of asbestos is highly regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution and fines if asbestos regulations are not followed.
