Community Meeting for Taos-area Special Education Set for July 25, 2010

WEBWIRE

(Taos, NM) -- Recent community concern regarding access to Special Education services in the Taos area has prompted scheduling of a Special Education Community Meeting on Sunday, July 25, 2010 from 2-5pm at the Taos Youth and Family Center (TYFC). TYFC is located at 407 Paseo del Canon East in Taos, NM and all community members are invited to attend.

Event coordinator Heather Rowley promotes the Special Education Community Meeting as “the most effective way for parents to come together to learn how to advocate for their kids and learn how to work with the local schools to ensure that their kids are receiving the services they need.”

The Community Meeting will offer parents and students the opportunity to access information and advocacy resources to help them understand their rights and responsibilities under the federal IDEA regulations. Representatives from both state-wide advocacy groups – New Mexico Family Network (NMFN) and Parents Reaching Out (PRO) - will be present to answer questions and offer advice.

All parents and students from the local public school districts, private schools, and charter schools are encouraged to attend the July 25th Community Meeting to share their concerns, learn about Special Education, and network with other parents and advocacy professionals.
