Funding Will Provide Technology for Interactive Health Education Programs and Exhibits at the New Mckenna Healthlink, Children’s Museum and Events Center

San Antonio, Texas, April 1, 2006, The AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), awards a $250,000 grant to McKenna Healthcare Foundation to provide technology for an array of interactive health education programs and exhibits at the new McKenna HealthLink, Children’s Museum, and Events Center in New Braunfels, Texas.

The McKenna HealthLink and Children’s facility will provide an innovative and effective means for engaging children and their families in interactive programming for health promotion, cultural education, disease prevention and science learning through technology-driven exhibits. The goal is to serve as a venue to promote healthy living principles to children and area residents in a region hit by skyrocketing lifestyle illness rates and a growing population of elderly and economically disadvantaged residents.

“This new facility will serve as a vital resource for the residents of south central Texas, and it will have a significant impact on the health and well-being of all who live here,” said State Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio. “In our work at the state Senate, we will continue to encourage creative solutions, both public and private, that address the challenges facing our communities.”

The McKenna HealthLink and Children’s Museum is expected to attract and introduce visitors of all ages to the wide range of low-cost health programs offered at the facility. Included will be educational classrooms, a gymnasium, entry to a prescription access program and a health resource center.

Special features for children and visitors of all ages will include the Innovation Center and the Grocery Store, Destination Space and Hospital exhibits. Through these no-cost exhibits and services, more disadvantaged and at-risk children and their families will have access to hands-on learning opportunities.

“Making proper lifestyle choices, managing chronic health conditions and preventing new illnesses are personal issues that can impact the entire community,” said Rep. Carter Casteel, R-New Braunfels. “This new facility will help impart key concepts for healthy living that will, ultimately, improve overall quality of life in this area.”

“We are pleased to help expand access to all HealthLink services in order to meet the growing needs of this diverse community,” said Gene Moreno, AT&T area manager of External Affairs. “We’re grateful for Senator Wentworth’s and Representative Casteel’s focus on health care issues and for their dedication to McKenna Healthcare Foundation in making this project a reality.”

In the first year of operation, 45,000 children and adults are expected to access the technology-driven exhibits and programming at the new facility. This represents a 150 percent increase over the number of visitors in 2004 and a 40 percent increase over 2003.

“This grant enables McKenna to integrate the latest technology tools to enhance our capacity to serve this growing region,” said Tim Brierty, McKenna Healthcare Foundation President.

Established in 1953, McKenna Health System carries out its mission to provide superior health care in a culture of excellence and compassion to citizens in Comal and the surrounding counties of south central Texas through a wide range of medical services. The McKenna Healthcare Foundation seeks to promote community health and to secure financial support to advance the mission of McKenna Memorial Hospital and McKenna Health System. In 2003, McKenna Health System acquired the New Braunfels Children’s Museum to preserve and develop the museum as a venue to promote healthy living principles to children and to strengthen relationships with and to creatively market the system’s health prevention and intervention services to area residents.
