What if There is No Such Thing as a Black or White Race? What if We Can Prove It?

Memphis, TN, July 14, 2010 - What if you suddenly discovered that your race was not what you had been told it was? What if upon investigation you found out there is no such thing as a white, black, red or yellow race? What if your entire investment in being connected to a particular race was proven to only be a hypothetical assumption? This symposium presented by State Representatives Barbara Cooper and Ulysses Jones in conjunction with The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists proves to do just that. The summit convenes at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, until 2:00 p.m. at The University of Memphis’ U.C. Theater (located in the U.C. Center). It will also be available to watch live at www.caseofrace.com. Admission is free to the public.

Race and racism, are issues that bring up shame, blame, anger and confusion for most and is a topic that permeates the whole of society. You may find it in the boardroom, the classroom, city hall and even the congress and white house. It is never far from the surface of most of the issues that affect our communities. The Cooper/Jones Initiative is honored to present this symposium as a modality to expose the myths, misconceptions and misnomers of this sensitive yet seductive topic.

“How can one define the character of a human being predicated on the melanin content of their skin?” , asks Al Lewis, Co-Founder of The Underground Railroad Training Odyssey, a training dedicated to healing the wounds of oppression. “There is a mountain of misunderstood information about race that has become a deluded reality.” Lewis says.
