The laboratories at LA Testing provide asbestos testing solutions to protect people, the environment and property from the dangers of asbestos exposure.

Los Alamitos, CA

A recent investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of a redevelopment project at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in Bayview, California found that current practices are now adequately protecting area residents from asbestos exposure. Two years ago a major homebuilder was fined more than a half a million dollars by California regulators for improperly managing and monitoring asbestos dust in the area.

When aerosolized and inhaled the mineral fibers from asbestos can become embedded in lung tissue and can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. In most cases as a person’s exposure to asbestos fibers increases, so do their chances of developing asbestos related cancers and diseases later in life.

Asbestos occurs naturally in some soils in the area. It was also heavily used in industries such as shipbuilding before its dangers were understood. Working with, and the disposal of, asbestos materials is highly regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution and fines if asbestos rules are not followed. Aside from making sure that asbestos materials are properly disposed of, people need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized creating dangerous environments for both workers and area residents.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides asbestos testing solutions utilizing PCM, PLM and TEM analytical procedures. “Protecting local people and workers from asbestos exposure is critical in all remediation and redevelopment projects,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Failure to follow regulations can lead to substantial fines and lawsuits. LA Testing and EMSL Analytical provide fast, accurate and affordable testing solutions to ensure materials that do contain asbestos are handled properly.”
