The laboratories at LA Testing provide asbestos testing solutions to protect people, the environment and property from the dangers of asbestos exposure.

Los Alamitos, CA

This month Arizona announced fines of $100,000 that three contractors have agreed to pay for violating asbestos rules. The fines resulted from construction work that took place in early 2006 at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) in Yuma, Arizona.

Problems at the military base came to light when concerned residents noticed a subcontractor crushing construction waste. Environmental professionals from the MCAS were notified who then got the ADEQ involved. Since asbestos can be found in a wide range of common building materials from insulation, flooring, ceilings, roofing, siding, fire coating materials and a host of other old building products it is imperative that materials be tested and probably disposed of to prevent harm to people and the environment.

Disposal of asbestos materials is regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution and fines if asbestos rules are not followed. Aside from making sure that asbestos materials are properly disposed of, people need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized creating dangerous environments for both workers and area residents.

Without the proper safety precautions, which are mandated by law, asbestos can be easily inhaled during projects which could increase the chances of developing deadly lung cancer. Some of these cancers associated with asbestos exposure can take decades to appear.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading source of environmental testing services, provides PCM, PLM, TEM asbestos testing solutions. “Contractors need to be aware of the asbestos regulations and follow them,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “Fines are substantial for failing to follow asbestos safety rules and testing solutions to determine if materials have asbestos are fast and affordable.”
