Top Expert Says Surveillance Cameras Are Vital For Security And Safety

Davie, Fla. – Security Surveillance expert Rudi Yzer lauded the role that video security surveillance systems recently played in indentifying the suspect in the failed car bombing attempt in Times Square . “Thanks to the quick work of some astute citizens and video surveillance footage, Faisal Shahzad was apprehended in short order,” Yzer said. Many major metropolitan cities are now utilizing similar technology to keep their citizens safe and quickly indentify criminal activity and those engaged in it. But Yzer says that surveillance technology isn’t just for catching terrorists or thwarting criminal activity. “Businesses use it as a deterrent to crime and as both a management and training tool. Homeowners often use it as an extra layer of protection over and above their existing security,” Yzer said. Specialized underwater cameras are also being used to monitor the flow of the oil spill in the Gulf as well as the progress being made on the attempted repairs. Whatever the use, Yzer says that it is important to approach purchasing a surveillance system with extreme care. “Not all systems are created equal,” he warns.

There are three specific keys to keep in mind when considering the installation and utilization of digital surveillance technology, according to Yzer.

The first is resolution. “Resolution makes all the difference when trying to identify an individual who has committed a crime or to verify whether a crime has been committed,” he said. While digital technology is more expensive it is worth it. Good resolution is imperative in the identification process. That is why so many companies are making the switch to digital technology, according to Yzer “With the right resolution and security system, a camera placed on the roof of a tall building will allow you to read the advertisement on the hat of someone walking down the street,” Yzer said. Most experts consider 3 mega pixels the absolute minimum required for a good surveillance system.

The second key is the right equipment installed in the right way. “It’s imperative that the right equipment is used and that it is installed correctly,” said Yzer. “Unfortunately, when people try to get the lowest price it winds up costing them in the long run,” Yzer warned. “You get what you pay for so it is buyer beware,” he added. Equipment purchased in a local electronics store isn’t designed to catch and indentify but rather discourage and deter a crime from being committed. Yzer says it is vital that cameras are installed in the right places too. “Things like lighting, blind spots and the number of cameras that are needed should be taken into consideration.”

The third component according to Yzer is contracting with a reputable company. “This is not a job for a local handyman and it is not a do it yourself project,” Yzer said. Too often, alarm companies that install security systems also offer video surveillance technology as an adjunct and Yzer said that’s a dangerous way to go. “It’s important that the company you choose is able to perform a complete security analysis based on careful inspection of your property and precise evaluation of your needs,” he said. “This is an area for a trained specialist.”
