Rolls-Royce wins $200 million in new power systems orders

WEBWIRE

Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, today announced orders worth over $200 million for electrical power generation equipment from customers in Australia, Bangladesh, Spain, Venezuela and Yemen.

Announcing the new orders at the Power-Gen Europe conference in Amsterdam, Charlie Athanasia, Rolls-Royce, Executive Vice-President - Power Generation, said: “We are very pleased to announce these new contracts which demonstrate the growing confidence power generators have in our technology and track record of delivery.

Rolls-Royce Bergen products remain extremely competitive and we have now sold Trent units to operators in 19 countries. Rolls-Royce is not only delivering the extra power our customers need, but our advanced technology also creates lower emissions levels, benefiting the environment.”

The new orders consist of 25 Bergen diesel engines, five Bergen gas engines and six Trent 60 gas turbines, which in total are capable of producing over 560MW of electrical energy for the five new customers.

The largest contract announced today, valued at $75 million, is from Bangladesh’s largest EPC Company, Energypac Power Generation Limited for 24 Rolls-Royce Bergen B32:40,16 cylinder diesel engines to be owned by the Bangladesh Power Development Board. Sixteen engines will provide 100MW of power at the Gopalgunj power station and eight engines will provide 50MW of electrical power at Faridpur following entry into service in August 2011.

All the engines will run on heavy fuel oil and will supply electricity to the country at times of peak demand as part of a significant power development programme initiated by the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who is also in charge of the Ministry for power.

Contracts from Australia and Venezuela will see a total of six Rolls-Royce Trent 60 gas turbine electrical generating packages delivered with a value of $110 million.

In Darwin, Australia, the Power and Water Corporation has selected two Trent 60 packages to deliver 116MW at their Channel Island power station, helping provide electricity to a region where power demand is increasing by four per cent per year. The two Trent units will increase the generation capacity by about 25 per cent.

The Florida, USA based Camelot Technologies Group International, Inc has contracted with Rolls-Royce to supply four new Trent 60 gas turbine generating sets to be installed in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela. At least two of the units are scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2010 with another two due to be online in the first quarter of 2011.

A new oil processing installation at a remote desert location in Yemen will use a combination of Rolls-Royce gas and diesel engines to provide 16MW of base load electrical power. Kentz Overseas limited has ordered three Bergen B35:40 12 cylinder gas fuelled engines, along with a single 12 cylinder Bergen B32:40 diesel engine, in a contract valued at $14 million. The gas for the B35:40 engines will be associated gas which is currently being flared.

Finally NUFRI, one of the largest fruit production and processing companies in Spain, has ordered two Bergen B35:40 16 cylinder gas engines for their fruit juice operation in Mollerussa, Spain. The engines will supply an efficient and reliable source of heat and power for 4,500 hours of operation annually.

There are currently over 150 Bergen gas engines operating across Spain in industries including food, plastics, ceramics, paper and chemical.
About Rolls-Royce:

1. Rolls-Royce, a world-leading provider of power systems and services for use on land, at sea and in the air, has established a strong position in global markets - civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy.
2. As a result of this strategy, Rolls-Royce today has a broad customer base comprising more than 600 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility aircraft and helicopter operators, 160 armed forces, more than 2,000 marine customers, including 70 navies, and energy customers in nearly 120 countries, with an installed base of 54,000 gas turbines.
3. Rolls-Royce employs over 39,000 skilled people in offices, manufacturing and service facilities in 50 countries. The Group has a strong commitment to apprentice and graduate recruitment, and to further developing employee skills.
4. In 2009, Rolls-Royce invested £864 million on research and development, two thirds of which had the objective of further improving the environmental aspects of its products, in particular the reduction of emissions.
5. Annual underlying revenues were £10.1 billion in 2009, of which about half came from services revenues. The firm and announced order book stood at £58.3 billion at 31 December 2009, providing visibility of future levels of activity.

About Rolls-Royce Energy

1. The Rolls-Royce energy business, with its headquarters in Mount Vernon, Ohio, has customers in nearly 120 countries providing them with power for electrical generation and for onshore and offshore oil and gas applications. This includes transporting oil and gas through 60 major pipelines in 26 countries and operating on offshore platforms in over 30 countries.
2. With production facilities in Canada, the USA and Norway and sales and marketing offices in North and South America, the UK, India, Italy, Russia, Spain, Singapore and China the energy business employs over 2,000 people. Currently the business has an order book in excess of £1.3 billion.
3. The energy portfolio offers a wide range of diesel engine, gas engine and gas turbine based solutions for the power generation market backed by a comprehensive range of service solutions. Power outputs range from 1.4MW to 64MW.
4. Included in the energy business is Distributed Generation Systems, a leading provider of small power generation and distribution systems of up to 1MW for military, marine, civil defence and disaster relief markets. 5. The most powerful and efficient engine in the energy product range is the Trent 60 gas turbine. It contains a high degree of commonality with its aero parent, benefiting from the three-shaft technology, a concept unique to 6. Rolls-Royce. The engineering principle behind the three shaft design involves low pressure (LP), intermediate pressure (IP) and high pressure (HP) systems, each comprising a number of compressor and turbine stages mounted on independent shafts, which can run at their optimum aerodynamic speeds. 7. As a guide, the Trent 60 LP system will operate at 3,000 or 3,600 rpm, the IP system at 7,500 rpm and the HP system at 10,000 rpm 8. The key difference between the Trent 60 and aero Trent 800 is the removal of the aero engine’s large wide-chord fan driven by its own LP turbine at the rear of the engine. It is replaced with a new two-stage LP compressor with variable inlet guide vanes. The Trent 60 engine retains the core of the aero engine - the IP and HP compressors and turbines. 9. Capable of delivering up to 64MW of electric power in simple cycle service at approx. 42 per cent efficiency, the engine has established a new benchmark for fuel economy and cost savings. 10. The number of Trent 60s sold or reserved by operators now totals 78 in 19 countries, for both power generation and oil and gas installations, with 31 engines in service in 11 countries. 11. Rolls-Royce has sold over 500 Bergen lean burn gas engines for industrial power stations and municipal applications to customers in 19 countries. The current range of B35:40 and C26:33 engines provide outputs from 1.3MW to 8.7MW. 12. The Rolls-Royce Bergen B32:40 and C25:33 liquid fuel oil-burning engines for power generation and mechanical drive applications provide customers with a power range from 1.3MW to 7.2MW. The B32:40 is available in 6, 8 and 9 cylinder in-line configuration and 12 and 16-cylinder Vee configuration. The C25:33 engine is available in 6, 8 and 9 in-line versions. More than 1,500 liquid fuel engines have been sold worldwide.
