LA Testing provides extensive testing solutions to identify contaminants and help revitalize old properties into new resources for communities.

Los Alamitos, CA

In April the Arizona city of Tucson and Pima County received the good news that they would be receiving a portion of the nearly $80 million in brownfield grants that are being distributed across the country. Some of Arizona’s allotted brownfield money will go towards an area along Arizona Route 85 near Ajo, Why and Lukeville and also for use in Tucson’s downtown area.

According the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Brownfields are real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties protects the environment, reduces blight, and takes development pressures off green spaces and working lands.”

The Brownfields Program has helped an estimated 450,000 abandoned or contaminated sites nationwide and has leveraged more than $14 billion in cleanup and redevelopment funds. The program provides direct funding for brownfield assessments, cleanup, revolving loans and environmental job training.

LA Testing, one of California’s largest environmental testing laboratory networks and part of the EMSL Analytical family of laboratories, provides analysis for all types of abandoned toxic and hazardous waste as well as old building materials frequently found during brownfields. Abandoned properties that were once used for manufacturing purposes are often contaminated with industrial waste and buildings may contain lead, asbestos, mold and other environmental concerns.

“The Brownfields Program has done an enormous amount of good for parts of our communities that are distressed and in need of revitalization,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “EMSL and LA Testing have a nationwide network of laboratories that can help by providing testing solutions for brownfield projects to ensure workers are protected and future building occupants are safe from contaminates.”
