DB Schenker Rail transports coal for Mark-E

Delivery of 500,000 to 700,000 tons of coal to power plants by rail

Mainz, DB Schenker Rail has signed a contract with Mark-E, an energy provider in North Rhine-Westphalia, for the transportation of coal required to operate its power plants. These shipments were previously handled by another rail freight carrier. Mark-E, a member of the ENERVIE Group, operates thermal power plants in Werdohl-Elverlingsen powered by two coal-fired units and two gas and steam turbine units. The plants generate over two billion kilowatt-hours of electric power annually.

Until the end of 2012, DB Schenker Rail will initially transport between 500,000 and 700,000 tons of hard coal from the seaports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and from various German coal mines and inland ports to Elverlingsen. Five trains will provide regular services from Rotterdam and Amsterdam to secure the basic supply; when required, additional trains will run between the mines, the inland ports and the power plant.

“The mining industry in particular has suffered severe losses due to the economic crisis,” said Karsten Sachsenröder, Member of the Management Board of DB Schenker Rail with responsibility for Sales, adding “We are therefore extremely pleased about the recovery of lost business and growth in this market segment.”

DB Schenker Rail Nederland is responsible for handling the shipments in the Netherlands, with the DB Schenker Rail subsidiary RBH Logistics responsible for shipments within Germany.
