Toy Jewelry Containing Mercury - a Real Threat

WEBWIRE

LA Testing provides mercury testing services to determine if products or the environment contain the hazardous metal.

Los Alamitos, CA

Earlier this year the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued warnings about toy jewelry containing mercury. Glass pendants containing the liquid metal have appeared in the state and if they leak, or break, they pose an immediate health risk.

Exposure to mercury usually occurs through inhalation or ingesting contaminated food products. The mercury filled glass pendants can cause immediate inhalation risks, if broken, since mercury can vaporize quite readily. This can cause an increased heart rate and blood pressure as well as chest pain and tightness of breath. Long term exposure can cause kidney and brain damage.

Mercury has many industrial applications and has been commonly used in the past in thermometers, dental fillings and batteries. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set a limit of 2 parts of mercury per billion parts of drinking water (2 ppb). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set a maximum permissible level of 1 part of methylmercury in a million parts of seafood (1 ppm). The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set limits of 0.1 milligram of organic mercury per cubic meter of workplace air (0.1 mg/m3) and 0.05 mg/m3 of metallic mercury vapor for 8-hour shifts and 40-hour work weeks.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical, is a leading provider of mercury and other heavy metal testing in consumer products and environmental samples. “The dangers surrounding mercury exposure are real and people need to know they can be exposed to the toxic metal in air, water, soil and even the foods they eat,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing provides testing solutions for mercury in all types of samples to ensure people’s safety and to protect the environment.”
