Pesticides Linked to ADHD in Children

EMSL Analytical provides pesticide testing solutions for environmental samples and food products to protect children from unnecessary exposure.

Westmont, NJ

The journal Pediatrics just published a study that reports that pesticide exposure in children seams to boost the chances that those children will be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study found that children with high levels of pesticides in their urine had almost double the risks of having ADHD.

According to the EPA website discussing pesticides and food, “…there are ‘critical periods’ in human development when exposure to a toxin can permanently alter the way an individual’s biological system operates.” Diet and environmental exposures to pesticides are the major exposure routes for children.

Pesticides are commonly used on many food products including fruits and vegetables. It is important that parents take notice of this most recent study and be sure to properly wash all fruits and vegetables to eliminate as much pesticide residues as possible.

Environmental exposures to pesticides can come in many forms and also be damaging. Children can be exposed in their homes due to improperly stored or applied pesticides. Children in agricultural areas may also be exposed to pesticides through airborne drift or water contamination.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest environmental and food product testing laboratories, provides complete testing solutions for both food safety and environmental analysis of pesticides. Analytical services include air, surface, soil and water analysis for pesticides and food testing can determine the presence and concentrations in consumer food products.

“EMSL’s chemistry laboratory has extensive experience testing for pesticides from a number of matrices,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “EMSL is also a major provider of food safety testing services, including testing for pesticides. EMSL has a long history of providing testing solutions for the general public, industry and regulators,” Frasca continued.
