Chromosomal Laboratories to Address Infidelity testing on Local CBS Affiliate.

The exploits of Tiger Woods and Jesse James have created a renewed awareness of how pervasive infidelity issues have become. In the United States, it is estimated that some 60% of men and 40% of women will cheat on their spouse during their marriage. Such events prompted Sarah Buduson of the Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO-5 to interview Aaron Schlum, MSFS, Laboratory Manager of Chromosomal Laboratories.

The interview, which is scheduled to air in May 2010, covers a variety of topics delving into the subject of infidelity from a laboratory perspective. Chromosomal Laboratories performs several presumptive screening tests in addition to confirmatory tests like microscopy and recovering DNA profiles. Ms. Schlum estimates that in the laboratory, somewhat in conflict with the statistics of who is cheating on whom, seventy percent of the samples are submitted by men. From the samples submitted, someone other than the spouse shows up in 20% of the cases.

Ms. Schlum, who earned a Bachelors Degree from the University of Colorado and a Masters Degree in Forensic Sciences from the University of Florida is responsible for processing dozens of these cases per month. Samples have been submitted by individuals ranging in age from twenty to seventy-nine. The vast majority of items submitted are clothing, bedding, or undergarments that are used to compare the DNA found on the items with references from themselves or others. This extremely accurate method can determine whether the DNA present is from themselves, their spouse or someone else. Gender determination from stains in question is part of the report. Reporting results is of course always handled in an extremely confidential manner.

While Chromosomal Laboratories predominantly performs DNA testing to support forensic and paternity matters, the infidelity field continues to be a demanded service that, with the exploits of Mr. Woods, Mr. James and others, shows no signs of slowing down.
