C. diff Infection Rates are increasing at Alarming Rates

In a number of hospitals across the country C. diff infections are surpassing Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA).

Clostridium difficile (C. diff) is a bacterium that causes diarrhea, colitis and other serious intestinal problems. According to an article from WebMD Health News “A virulent new strain of the gut bug C. diff is sweeping the U.S. Among those who fall ill, the fatality rate has doubled to 2.2%. A new study shows that diagnosed adult cases of C. diff more than doubled in five years: from 134,361 cases in 2000 to 291,303 cases in 2005.”

According to the CDC, “The increased rates and/or severity of disease may be caused by changes in antibiotic use, changes in infection control practices, or the emergence of a new strain of C. difficile-associated disease with increased virulence and/or antimicrobial resistance.” The agency goes on to state, “…the emergence of a new strain of C. difficile-associated disease causing hospital outbreaks in several states has been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at scientific meetings.”

C. diff can survive for weeks or more on many hard surfaces commonly found in hospitals. These can include call buttons, faucets, bed rails, door handles and many other places. One recent study by Duke University that was presented at the Fifth Decennial International Conference on Healthcare-Associated Infections showed C. diff rates were 25% more common than MRSA infections at 28 hospitals studied.

UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI), a leading provider of advanced ultraviolet (UV) disinfection products for air and surfaces, has designed products to specifically eliminate threats from C. diff, MRSA and other pathogens found in hospitals and other indoor environments.

“Properly applied, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) can efficiently disinfect air and surfaces contaminated with C. diff and other pathogens and ultimately save lives and reduce medical costs,” reported Paul Cochrane, Public Relations Manager for UVDI. “Solutions include mobile surface disinfection technology such as UVDI’s Mobile Room Sanitizer or the NLA-90 portable air treatment unit. Permanent air stream disinfection technologies such as UVDI’s V-FLEX® and V-RAY GRID™ systems, which are installed directly in the HVAC system, are also excellent solutions.”
