World Economic Forum on Europe opens Monday in Brussels

Brussels, Belgium - The World Economic Forum on Europe will open next week in Brussels, bringing together over 400 leaders from business, government, academia and civil society from over 40 countries. The meeting will be held under the theme Renewed Leadership, New Vision from 10 to 11 May. It is the first time that the World Economic Forum on Europe will be held in Brussels. The meeting is co-hosted with the Government of Belgium shortly before it assumes the rotating presidency of the European Union.

The list of participants and programme were announced at a press conference in Brussels today with Steven Vanackere, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Institutional Reforms of Belgium, and Stephen Kinnock, Director, Head of Europe and Central Asia, World Economic Forum.

“We are holding this meeting at a critical moment for the European Union. The EU’s new leadership team is facing serious challenges at a time when Europe needs to reassert itself on the world stage,” said Stephen Kinnock. “This meeting will provide that team with an opportunity to outline its vision for the future of Europe and to engage with other key stakeholders who will play an important role in delivering it.”

José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and Herman A. Van Rompuy, President of the European Council of the European Union, are leading a strong delegation of key representatives from the European Commission that also includes Joaquín Almunia, Vice-President and Commissioner for Competition; László Andor, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion; Karel De Gucht, Commissioner for Trade; Connie Hedegaard, Commissioner for Climate Action; Günther H. Oettinger, Commissioner for Energy; and Olli Rehn, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

The international character of the business participants is reflected in the Co-Chairs of the meeting: Chander P. Gurnani, Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Satyam, India; Jeffrey Joerres, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Manpower, USA; Lord Levene, Chairman, Lloyd’s, United Kingdom; Sir Martin Sorrell, Group Chief Executive, WPP, United Kingdom; and Ruben K. Vardanian, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Troika Dialog Group, Russian Federation.
