TestAmerica Expert Provides Key Considerations for Selecting an Isotopic Uranium Method at the 2010 TCEQ Conference

Terry Romanko, TestAmerica’s Technical Director and Radiochemistry expert, will present on key method analyses for identifying and quantifying various isotopes in uranium, at the 2010 TCEQ Environmental Trade Fair and Conference. The presentation will be given on May 4, 2010 in Austin, TX.

Found naturally or man-made, uranium isotopes can be present in environmental or waste samples. With increased health risks due to the element’s chemical composition and radioactivity, accurate identification and quantification of isotopes is required. The three primary methods of analysis include alpha spectroscopy, gamma spectroscopy, and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS).

In selecting an appropriate method for isotopic uranium analysis, four factors or drivers need to be considered. These will include turnaround time (TAT), detection limit goals, the importance of isotopic abundance, and cost. Mr. Romanko will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology to assist in determining the most advantageous selection.
