New Policy Aims to Minimize Dust & Particulates in Maricopa County

Dust particles no larger than 10 microns in diameter, also known as PM10, are a major concern for air quality professionals in Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding county. Earlier this month the Maricopa County Air Quality Department presented a draft proposal aimed at reducing unhealthy dust levels across the county.

Maricopa County has had a long history of challenges battling airborne particulate matter and reducing PM10 levels. The county regularly exceeds federal standards for dust emissions and if the county is unable to comply with federal standards they risk losing millions of dollars in federal transportation funding.

The draft proposal would require that new and modified permit seekers conduct an impact analysis of dust emissions and if the emissions equal or exceeds a major impact level then a cumulative analysis would be required. Basically the new proposal, if passed, would give the county the ability to deny permits. If approved the policy could take effect by July 1st.

Inhaling small particles has been extensively studied over the years and has been shown to cause everything from asthma to premature death. The smaller the particle the deeper it can penetrate the respiratory system. PM10 sized particles can reach the bronchi and lungs causing severe health problems.
