Initiative bridges gap between IP and legacy technologies

Paris, France – March 23, 2006, SITA, the world’s leading service provider of IT business solutions and communications services to the air transport industry, is driving down costs for the community through its Airport Hubs initiative. SITA estimates network access cost savings in participating airports to be in the 10-25 % range.

Communication services are usually delivered in airports using multiple, dedicated resources (routers, ageing legacy platforms, per service connection circuits). Through its Airport Hubs initiative SITA is, uniquely, providing airport environments where many airlines are “sharing” common facilities. Airport Hubs consist of a WAN and Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) infrastructure, deployed in airports worldwide, to deliver Internet Protocol (IP) and legacy services over a shared infrastructure, effectively bridging the gap between the two technologies. This offers an opportunity for cost savings and service improvements.

“SITA understand the airline industry better than any other vendor, and leverages this knowledge by providing unique solutions tailored to our specific needs,” said Kari Hänninen, Director, ICT Architectures Corporate Information Management, Finnair. “With SITA SC’s Airport Hubs programme we expect to double our network bandwidth, for significantly lower cost than the old system.”

“Airport Hubs is an evolution, not a revolution,” says Moshe Levertov, SITA Vice President for Airport Hubs. “The initiative highlights SITA’s role and commitment in providing the Air Transport Community with innovative and effective ways of using technology to drive down costs.”

SITA’s Airport Hubs are available worldwide, in countries ranging from Mexico to Switzerland to Japan, with over 100 airports planned by the end of the year. In addition to Finnair, more than 50 customers have adopted the shared infrastructure environment.
