Detroit Stopped from Demolishing Vacant Homes due to Possible Asbestos Contamination

Michigan’s EMSL Analytical laboratory can provide the city and demolition contractors with quick and accurate asbestos testing solutions.

Westmont, NJ

Earlier this week it was reported that Detroit’s plan to demolish 3,000 vacant homes this year has been put on hold by Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNRE). The agency learned of the city’s plans from the media and discovered that they had failed to follow state regulations regarding asbestos testing and removal.

The city must test for asbestos and if any is found properly remove the cancer causing material before razing the abandoned structures. A ten day notification to the state is also required before restarting the demolition process.

Since asbestos can be easily aerosolized when disturbed the destruction of so many structures with possible asbestos contamination could lead to dangerous conditions for workers and nearby residents. Cancers associated with asbestos exposure sometimes take decades to appear after initial exposure.

The city has acknowledged the situation and plans to move forward following all state regulations and procedures. The initial 3,000 structures slated to be razed this year will be part of a total of 10,000 over the next four years.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest asbestos testing laboratories, has nearly three decades of asbestos testing experience. They have an accredited asbestos testing laboratory in nearby Ann Arbor, Michigan that can provide rapid and cost effective asbestos testing for the city and demolition contractors.

“EMSL’s Ann Arbor, Michigan laboratory has been providing asbestos testing solutions for area residents and industries for many years,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “The NVLAP accredited laboratory is one of Michigan’s premier asbestos and environmental testing facilities and it is also certified to test for asbestos in drinking water,” Frasca continued.
