Alameda County Receives Grants to Tackle Asthma in Homes

LA Testing provides testing solutions for mold, allergens, lead and chemical contaminants in residential and commercial structures.

Pasadena, CA

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded $875,000 to the Alameda County Community Development Agency. The agency plans on using the funds to help 150 homes that are at high risk for mold, pests, allergens and other safety issues.

The effort is meant to target asthma, especially in homes with older adults caring for children. The at-risk homes will be accessed on multiple occasions for asthma triggers and other environmental safety issues. Alameda County has over 1.5 million residents and the county ranks high amongst other state counties in people living below the poverty line.

The problem of allergens in homes that can trigger asthmatic attacks can come from a host of items inhabitants breath. Allergens from cockroaches, rodents, pet dander, pollen and mold can all cause problems. According to some reports, asthma affects up to 7% of the entire population, so anything that can be done to minimize or eliminate threats from this potentially deadly condition could have far reaching effects.

Asthma attacks lead to an inflammation of the lungs and airways leading to difficulty in breathing and sometimes even death. Asthma in children has been reported to be on the rise in many industrialized countries across the globe.

LA Testing, and their parent company EMSL Analytical, are one of the nation’s largest mold and allergen testing laboratories. LA Testing has extensive experience analyzing samples for common allergens. “This grant is good news for the residents of California and especially Alameda County,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “There are simple and affordable tests that can be performed to make sure all homes are not contaminated by mold, lead or allergens. These can make a huge difference in the quality of life for people,” Sublasky continued.
