Monday, March 20 2006, Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) has signed its longest technology contract ever with New Zealand Police. The 21-year supply and support agreement, exclusive to Ericsson, will provide MINI-LINK microwave radio systems, transmission products and support, to help the police build its own internal nationwide communication network.

The network will provide high-speed communications to police radio sites and police stations. Thanks to high-capacity radios and smart traffic nodes incorporating the latest technology, the new network will efficiently carry both voice and data traffic on a self-sufficient IP network.

Richard Harkett, New Zealand Police Manager, Radio says: “Ericsson was chosen for the deal because of its extensive global expertise, local knowledge and proven performance. Its solutions are reliable and they meet our precise requirements.”

Lars Lönnstig, Sales Vice President, Ericsson Business Unit Transport and Transmission, says: “Ericsson is pleased to be able to extend its already long-standing relationship with the police. We have been working with the police since the early 80s. Ericsson is very proud to provide expertise and support to an organisation whose core value is to ensure public safety.”

Ericsson’s ongoing work with the police includes the supply of key mobile security software, Ericsson Mobile Corporate Access, which the police will use in its project to turn police cars into mobile police stations.

Ericsson has also completed the upgrade of the New Zealand Police’s current telephony platform in its rural areas to Ericsson IP telephony. Three thousand IP phones are installed to provide a more cost effective and efficient service. The Police will upgrade the remaining 6,500 Ericsson phones to IP telephony phones using the new server based platform MX-ONE™.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world. Read more at http://www.ericsson.com
