WEBWIRE

Skyfire, makers of the Webby award-winning browser for mobile devices, today announced the acquisition of kolbysoft, creators of the Steel mobile browser for Android. The acquisition is effective immediately. Financial details of the deal are not being disclosed.

“By adding kolbysoft’s talent to Skyfire, we’ll be able to fuse the best of Skyfire’s famed cloud-computing multimedia capabilities with the Webkit browser movement to create a better hybrid model for Android,” explained Jeff Glueck, CEO of Skyfire. “Steel has been the most acclaimed browser in the Android Marketplace, adding features atop Webkit. Together, we’ll be able to do so much more.”

The acquisition brings considerable Android and user experience talent to Skyfire. Michael Kolb, founder of kolbysoft, will become chief client architect for all of Skyfire’s browsers across operating systems.

“We’re very excited to bring our technology and expertise to Skyfire,” said Michael Kolb, founder of kolbysoft. “It’s a great opportunity to build upon Skyfire’s fervent fan base with an entirely new operating system market.”

Kolb noted that users of the existing version of the Steel browser will still be able to use the current version, but will be offered upgrades to Skyfire Android edition once it is released.

Skyfire uses advanced cloud-computing technology to enable users to access any content on the ”desktop Internet” from their mobile devices, including Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight video. Skyfire also boosts the speed of complex websites, optimizing delivery of mobile video and content while lessening the strain on crowded cellular networks, thanks to cloud rendering and compression. Skyfire v1.5 is currently available for hundreds of smartphones that run Windows Mobile and Symbian Series 60 (such as the Nokia E and N series).
