WEBWIRE

“Silence Not, A Love Story,” a new play by Cynthia L. Cooper, will be presented in the Twin Cities on February 9, 2010 at 6 pm at the Wellstone Center/Neighborhood House in St. Paul. The event is free and open to the public.

The dramatic presentation of ‘Silence Not, A Love Story, is the culmination of a day of celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Gisa Konopka, presented by the University of Minnesota’s Konopka Institute for Best Practices in Adolescent Health. February marks the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Dr. Konopka’s birth in 1910.

This play is based on the true stories of Gisa and her husband Paul, who, as young people in Germany, found love and courage in the late 1920s and early 1930s as they spoke out against the rise of Nazism in Germany during a time of economic crisis. Part mystery, part love story, the play depicts a little known era of activism and resistance. Based on her experiences, Dr. Konopka believed deeply in social justice and youth engagement throughout her extensive career as a professor at the U of M.

Cynthia L. Cooper is an award-winning playwright and a former two-time Jerome Fellow at the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, where she served on then-existing artistic directorate of the organization. Cooper, who now lives in New York City, will attend.

The presentation of “Silence Not, A Love Story” will be directed by Carolyn Levy, a professor at Hamline University and active director in the Twin Cities. She formerly was the Artistic Director of the Women’s Theatre Project and directs with the Minnesota Jewish Theatre, the History Theatre, and other venues.

Featured in the staged reading are Twin Cities’ actors Ellen Apel, Brian Columbus, Matthew B. Hertz, Danielle Krivinchuk, Anna Olson, Matt Riggs and Hannah Steblay; Melissa Arbuckle serves as stage manager.

The play will be preceded by a reception with dinner fare from 5 to 6 pm at the same location.

“Silence Not, A Love Story” is published by Gihon River Press, www.GihonRiverPress.com. Copies of the book signed by the author will be available at intermission.
