Breaking up with a girlfriend is hard to do, which keeps many men from doing it at all. In other words, they stay in relationships out of fear of “breaking the news.”

The problem of sticking around in unhappy relationships is far more prevalent than most realize. According to Freeman, guilt is a major motivator for staying with a boyfriend or girlfriend, or even in a marriage.
Feeling trapped in a relationship can bring on acute stress, so if you feel more like a hostage than a boyfriend, you should take steps to leave.
Freeman, whose education includes a Master’s in political science and “15 years of self-study in psychology,” has learned some of the lessons personally: “I felt stuck in a long-term relationship with a girlfriend for 3 years, and it was one of the most stressful periods of my life.” He went on to write a manual for men on how to leave unhappy relationships.
