LA Testing, a California based environmental and materials testing laboratory, helps the general public and manufacturers find out the answer.

Los Alamitos, CA

According to a recent article in the American Scientist more than 45 billion kilograms of plastics are produced annually in the United States and bispenol A (BPA), a commonly used plastic additive, ranks in the top 2 percent of high-production-volume chemicals. In recent years public concern over BPA has increased as new research regarding how it may affect human health has come to light.

The U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) recently expressed concern regarding BPA’s adverse effects to the “brain, behavior and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children.” To date there has been little consensus amongst health agencies regarding the safety of BPA.

BPA is used in plastics, including drinking containers, as well as in liners in canned food products. The chemical is a known endocrine disruptor and low amounts may mimic a person’s own hormones.

In 2008 some major retailers pulled products with BPA from their shelves after media reports of potential health problems came to light. Some manufacturers of reusable water bottles, and other plastic containers, now market products that are labeled as free of BPAs.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of consumer product testing services, is one of the nation’s foremost experts on BPA and has made a concerted effort to help educate the public and public health professionals about its dangers.

“As the public has grown more aware of the potential for chemicals such as BPA to leach into their foods from containers we have seen an increase in calls to our laboratory for testing from consumers, retailers and manufacturers,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “The consumer products testing that LA Testing and EMSL provide at their state-of-the-art laboratories can quickly and effectively answer people’s questions and safety concerns over BPA’s presence in products.”
