SRX5800 Provides Mobile Market Leader With Comprehensive and Scalable Security Solution to Meet The Challenge of Explosive IP Traffic Growth

INDONESIA — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, announced that PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), Indonesia’s leading mobile service provider, has successfully deployed Juniper Networks SRX5800 Services Gateways in its packet switched core network. Together with Juniper Networks E320 Broadband Services Routers and Steel-Belted Radius® Appliances, this provides Telkomsel with a highly secure, stable and scalable PS Core to handle the highly explosive IP traffic growth it is experiencing.

Telkomsel had 79.77 million customers at the end of September 2009, representing an estimated more than 50% share of Indonesia’s highly-competitive mobile market. It launched the country’s first 3G/HSPDA service in September 2006 and the following year launched the TelkomselFLASH mobile broadband service, which now has more than 1,000,000 customers.

“Broadband penetration in Indonesia is still very low but we’ve seen IP traffic really take off, driven by mobile broadband customers and users of Apple iPhones and other handsets capable or running sophisticated IP applications,” said Siswanto Dasijo, VP Technology Master Plan of PT Telekomunikasi Selular. “This as a golden opportunity entering 2010 to build market share in a fast-growing, high-margin Broadband segment. We’ve therefore bolstered our packet switch core network with Juniper’s solution to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure our customers enjoy a first-class Internet experience.”

Through the addition of service processing cards (SPCs) the Juniper Networks SRX5800 Services Gateway can support almost linear scalability, with a fully equipped SRX5800 able to handle more than 120 Gbps of firewall throughput. As well as firewalling, the SPCs and Junos® OS running on the the SRX5800 support a wide range of services — including intrusion prevention, protection from distributed denial of service, network address translation, and dynamic routing — without the need for service-specific hardware.

“Mobile service providers are facing a squeeze at their Internet gateways as customers hit them using ’full-fidelity’ consumer and business IP applications that place great demands on their security infrastructure,” said Tedjalesmana Ronny Sumantri, Country Manager of Indonesia, Juniper Networks. “Telkomsel clearly recognizes this as an opportunity and has taken steps to ensure that its customers and its business benefit from Juniper’s approach of providing flexible processing scalability, I/O scalability, and services integration in a single device.”

Telkomsel chose Juniper Networks E320 Broadband Services Routers and Steel-Belted Radius Appliances as a more scalable replacement for the legacy system used for authentication and service provisioning of its TelkomselFLASH customers. In early September Telkomsel doubled its 3G spectrum with the acquisition of an additional 5 MHz of bandwidth, strengthening its ability to continuous deliver the best quality-of-service, especially to the broadband customers.
