The Maricopa County Superior Court has recently fined a landowner from Prescott, Arizona over $71,000 for illegally disposing of asbestos waste close to an aquifer. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) had charged the individual with ten civil infractions related to the case.

Asbestos can be found in a wide range of common building materials from insulation, flooring, ceilings, roofing, siding, fire coating materials and a host of other old building products. The disposal of asbestos is regulated and individuals and companies are subject to prosecution if asbestos regulations are not followed.

Aside from making sure that asbestos materials are properly disposed of, people need to be aware that during abatement or demolition projects asbestos can be easily aerosolized. This creates a dangerous environment for both workers and building occupants.

Without the proper safety precautions asbestos can be easily inhaled during projects which could increase one’s chances of developing deadly lung cancer. Cancers associated with asbestos exposure can take up to decades to appear.

To help protect the public, the Clean Air Act and the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants require contractors to follow certain steps during projects that involve asbestos. These requirements include actions that must be taken before work commences, during renovations and to ensure proper waste disposal.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of asbestos testing services, has laboratories ready to respond with affordable and rapid asbestos sample analysis. “It is important that people test suspect materials before any demolition or renovations commence to determine if asbestos is present in a property,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “This not only protects those that would otherwise be exposed to the dangerous materials, but also helps ensure that all safety and disposal regulations are followed.”
