(Springfield, MA) - By offering a variety of services ranging from dry cleaning and shoe repair to fitness centers and banking, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) helps its employees save 1.9 million driving trips a year. Those trips translate to more than 240,000 gallons of gas1, thus saving money and ultimately reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.

The data is part of an ongoing analysis at MassMutual to track both cost and environmental impact savings within the company due to operational improvements.

MassMutual’s onsite amenities at the Springfield, Mass. and Enfield, Conn. campuses include daycare facilities, gift stores, pharmacies, a credit union, fitness centers, walk-in medical clinics, dry cleaning, shoe and jewelry repair, tailoring as well as hair salon and barber services, express shipping, and a property and motor vehicle insurance vendor. On average these services have provided significant savings for the company’s employees by saving them an estimated 4.7 million miles2, $637,698 in gas3 and from emitting greenhouse gases including 2,840 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e)4, into the earth’s atmosphere.

“Being an environmentally responsible company isn’t just about using better light bulbs or updating our technology to save energy, it’s also about finding ways to help our employees be green in their own lives,” says Sean Anderson, Assistant Vice President, Facilities and Operations and Director of MassMutual’s Green Initiatives.

In addition to its many amenities, the company also publishes information on an internal green web page and holds regular “Green Lunch & Learns” where employees can gather useful information about greening their homes as well as MassMutual’s own recycling and conservation efforts.

“For more than 25 years MassMutual has worked hard to reduce our impact on the environment and we are dedicated to continuing our efforts in reducing our carbon footprint and inspiring our staff to do the same,” says Anderson.
