Last month a new study was released in the American Journal of Public Health that estimates 9% of childhood asthma cases in Long Beach, and 6% in Riverside, are attributable to pollution from nearby harbors and distribution centers. The study’s findings show that children attending school or living near these congested trade corridors have significantly higher rates of asthma.

The collaborative study combined research from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), University of Southern California and epidemiologists from Europe. The report shows that previous estimates on air pollution-related diseases underestimated the actual negative health effects. Surveys by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the California Air Resources Board also estimate that up to 4,000 residents near San Pedro Bay die each year from air pollution-related illnesses.

The cause of much of the pollution in these busy harbor and transportation corridors are due to ship emissions (nitrogen oxide fumes) and diesel exhaust from trucks and trains. The proximity people live to these areas appears to have a direct correlation to increased rates of asthma.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of advanced environmental laboratory services, has several laboratories throughout California that provide air quality testing services in the state. The laboratory has a long tradition of working with federal agencies, such as the EPA, as well as local school districts, municipalities and industry.

“The dangers associated with exposure to nitrogen oxide and other components of engine exhaust are evident in the recently released studies,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing and EMSL Analytical have the expertise to provide testing solutions to ensure children and adults living in these areas know what is in the air they breathe.”
