Over the last several years there have been a number of media reports regarding tainted Chinese toys that have lead to massive product recalls. As the holiday shopping season is in full swing parents should be aware of the potential for continuing threats from heavy metals and chemicals that can leach from children’s toys.

In an issue of the Pediatrics journal earlier this year a study reported that a number of common baby products may be exposing children to a group of chemicals known as phthalates. Phthalates are used in many children’s products as fragrance stabilizers and to keep plastics flexible, durable and transparent.

The federal government passed legislation last year to toughen limits on lead and phthalate levels in children’s toys. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced earlier this year that “starting February 10, 2009, consumer products intended for children 12 and under cannot have more than 600 parts per million of lead in any accessible part. This new safety requirement is a key component of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) aimed at further reducing children’s exposure to lead.”

The legislation is a positive move for consumers, but some products may slip through the cracks. Also stores that sell used toys are not required to certify those used products are within the new federal limits. “The dangers associated with lead and phthalates is a real threat,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “LA Testing and EMSL Analytical have the expertise to provide testing solutions to ensure children’s products are safe.”

Earlier this year the CPSC announced that EMSL Analytical, the parent company of LA Testing, is an accredited laboratory for testing for phthalate content, Test Method CPSC-CH-C1001 and for testing lead content in children’s metal jewelry, Test Method CPSC-CH-E1001-08.
