Hanoi.Following the signature of the intergovernmental agreement on space cooperation that took place during François Fillon’s visit to Vietnam, Astrium CEO François Auque has signed a partnership agreement with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to develop an Earth observation optical satellite system.

* Astrium is the world’s leading exporter of Earth observation satellites

The agreement with VAST, which is responsible for setting up Vietnam’s space programme for Earth observation, and Astrium, covers the system design for the Vietnam Natural Resources, Environment and Disaster Monitoring Satellite, which will fulfil the country’s needs in this area.

The system will include the satellite, and the ground control, receiving and image processing stations. The agreement also covers a joint cooperation programme and training of Vietnamese engineers. The image processing and ground station will make use of the facilities already developed by Vietnam for its ENRMS station, a multi-satellite ground station of Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

“I am extremely pleased by this agreement,” declared Mr. Auque, “which is the result of several years of ongoing cooperation between Astrium and the leaders of the VAST space programme concerning Vietnam’s Earth observation satellite project. Astrium is committed to developing and implementing a long-term strategic partnership with Vietnam for space activities.”

Astrium is currently the world’s leading exporter of Earth observation satellites. It has signed international partnership agreements with Thailand, South Korea, Algeria, Chile, and more recently Kazakhstan.

Astrium, a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS, is dedicated to providing civil and defence space systems and services. In 2008, Astrium had a turnover of €4.3 billion and more than 15,000 employees in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands. Its three main areas of activity are Astrium Space Transportation for launchers and orbital infrastructure, Astrium Satellites for spacecraft and ground segment and Astrium Services for the development and delivery of satellite services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2008, EADS generated revenues of €43.3 billion and employed a workforce of more than 118, 000.
