McAfee, Inc. Awarded Service Agreement to Deploy Integrated Security Management Solution for the U.S. Air Force
McAfee’s Solution to Help Drive Continued Deployment of DISA’s Award Winning Host Based Security System (HBSS)
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) announced today a $9.7 million services agreement with Northrop Grumman Information Systems for fielding and deployment of the Host Based Security System (HBSS), an extensive security solution for the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet).
The HBSS 3.0 task order was awarded to Northrop Grumman Corporation via the Air Force Network-Centric Solutions (NETCENTS) contract. Northrop Grumman Information Systems is the prime contractor and holder of the NETCENTS contract with the US Air Force Combat Information Transport System (CITS) Program Management Office.
SIPRNet is the communications backbone of the Department of Defense (DoD) that facilitates the exchange of classified tactical and operational information at the SECRET classification level for the Air Force and other branches of the Armed Services.
Under the terms of the agreement, McAfee will deploy the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Host Based Security System (HBSS) solution which provides desktops, servers and laptops across the DoD with the McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention Systems (McAfee HIPS) signature and behavioral protection, and a system firewall.
McAfee HIPS is the underlying technology, and an integral component, of the DISA HBSS solution, which monitors, detects, and counters against known cyber-threats to the DoD’s enterprise architecture.
“The U.S. Air Force has enhanced its cyber security infrastructure through its worldwide deployment of HBSS,” said Mike Carpenter, senior vice president, Public Sector, McAfee. “Given our experience helping DISA expand HBSS throughout DoD, McAfee can help the Air Force maximize the full benefits of the HBSS architecture. In addition, this new HBSS security framework will provide the Air Force with a strong centralized security management system to provide critical cyber information to the newly created 24th Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base.”
This deployment also provides the McAfee® VirusScan Enterprise, McAfee® Anti-spyware Enterprise and McAfee® Policy Auditor solutions to enhance the security of SIPRNet and measure system security compliancy. This new capability will provide the U.S. Air Force with a consolidated enterprise security management and reporting system for increased cyber situational awareness.
This contract is a follow on to a Non-Classified Internet Protocol Router Network (NIPRNet) contract with the U.S. Air Force CITS Program Management Office that was rapidly deployed by McAfee and Northrop Grumman in the second half of 2008. The NIPRNet roll out of HBSS for the U.S. Air Force was a great success that deployed to over 500,000 hosts in a six month period. This was the largest and fastest single McAfee HIPS deployment that McAfee has undertaken to date worldwide.
HBSS, the largest IT security deployment within the DoD, provides multi-layered threat protection for more than five million DoD host platforms such as servers, desktops, and laptops in accordance with the Enterprise-wide Information Assurance and computer Network Defense Solutions Steering Group. The HBSS solution will provide Air Force with integrated security capabilities such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, host intrusion prevention, remediation and security policy auditing for these host platforms.
McAfee HIPS also supports McAfee® ePolicy Orchestrator® (McAfee ePO™) management framework, a dedicated security management console, the first-ever to manage security postures maintained by other security solution providers. Under McAfee ePO Air Force network administrators can keep this protection up to date, configure and enforce security policies, and monitor security status from one centralized console.
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise will provide the Air Force with superior, comprehensive threat protection for every system and at every level -- from desktops, file servers, e-mail servers, and Internet gateways, to remote and wireless devices. McAfee Anti-spyware Enterprise uses unique on-access scanning to identify, proactively block, and safely eliminate spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.
