The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that up to 24 million homes in the country contain substantial lead paint hazards. Even though the use of lead in paint has been banned since 1978 it is believed that about one in five homes still have lead paint hazards. As lead contaminated paints age they begin to deteriorate and can become airborne or settle as dust.

Lead is of particular concern to young children as their growing bodies can absorb more lead and their brain and nervous systems are more sensitive to the negative health effects. Children also tend to place their hands and objects in their mouths allowing for lead to easily enter their bodies. Lead can even harm babies before they are born. In fact according to the EPA, “to reduce your child’s exposure to lead, get your child checked, have your home tested and fix any hazards you may have.”

Federal stimulus money recently increased the amount of funds available for lead remediation by an additional $78 million. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides grants to municipalities to tackle lead contamination issues in homes. This funding is crucial as many unknowing property owners renovate their homes without proper precautions in place that can make the situation worse by creating lead laden dust.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical, is a leading provider of lead testing laboratory services and products to clients across the West Coast. “The dangers associated with lead poisoning are serious and should not be taken lightly,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “If not detected early, children with high levels of lead in their systems can suffer from stunted growth, learning problems, hearing issues, damaged nervous systems and diminished brain functions.”
